Storm Damage CalculatorCalculate Your Tax Deductions for
Property Damage From a Natural Disaster

August 2011

Do you have property losses not covered by insurance? Uncle Sam offers some tax relief. To qualify for the write-off, the damage must be caused by an unexpected, identifiable event, such as a flood, earthquake, hurricane, tornado, etc. (accidents and deterioration don't count). For nonbusiness losses, only those who itemize can claim a deduction. Also, the amount of the unreimbursed loss must first be reduced by $100 and the balance can be deducted only to the extent it exceeds 10% of your adjusted gross income.

The calculator below will help you determine if you can take advantage of this write-off for personal casualty losses
